Daddy can you carry me down the hall?
Later you'll find time to watch me play baseball.
Working three jobs so that we all can eat,
You're touching all the bases without missing a beat.
Daddy do you have to drink that booze?
Standing by the calendar, playing your jazz and blues.
Every time you shout those words, "Get me an ale!"
The coffin is pounded in by one more nail.
Daddy can you come and see me dance?
I'll fix your tie and I'll straighten out your pants.
Later you'll give me your critique as you walk with your cane
Then you'll bend down to pick up a leaf that begins to wane.
Daddy will you let me bring you way out west?
Onto Duke's home as you just might request.
Watching the ships along the Hudson River
You talk of the Marines and how they deliver.
Daddy I hate to see all these tubes and wires.
Having you walk and talk again is my one desire.
Please let me hold your hand just a little bit longer.
Nod if you would like the grip to be a little bit stronger.
Daddy you gave me blood, now I give you mine.
I know it's short notice, but I hope it's in time.
Today you'll meet my sweetheart, she's my new soul mate.
I get to the hospital and they tell me that I'm too late.
Daddy I can't believe the words I was just
told.
Now I see your body and it's freezing cold.
I kiss you one last time before they close that door.
Then a requiem mass where the echo of bagpipes roar.
Daddy you'd always say, "It's your mother's
birthday too."
Proving that you loved her just as we all loved you.
So I won't wait for the third Sunday in June.
I'll honor you now as I write this tune.
..
Father's Day
